1st Day of School

After doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and shopping for 5 days I decide it is time to officially start school.  Although it is almost 3 weeks out from when most Organized (not saying that I’m not) Schools start I figure it is best to get a jump start so there is no need to worry about the days missed while stuck in the car driving home.

I can’t deny that I am SO excited about not having to buy uniforms this year but more importantly not having to remember which kid is in which uniform on which day.  No searching endlessly for the certain color and type of required shoes, and no staying on top of hair cuts above the collars (but who are we kidding on this one, I was never on top of that!) I told the boys there are 2 Rules before starting school – 1.Eat Breakfast and 2. Change out of your Pajamas.  My son Aidan has always been the type of kid who tries to get his work done right away so that he can move on to what he wants to do.  He was always trying to do his homework on the bus and if he didn’t finish he would continue to do it while walking home from the bus stop.  He would walk in the door put his hands up and simply shout “DONE!”  The first day of our school my son Aidan tells me he doesn’t eat breakfast so he wants to start his work.  I remind him he first needs to change out of his pajamas before he can start. With a huff he walks away.  The next day he again is the first one up, doesn’t want breakfast and says he is dressed and ready to go.  I look at him and realize he is wearing the same clothes as the day before so I say to him, “Aidan, did you sleep in your clothes from yesterday?”  He replies, “Yeah, why?  Then I don’t have to change my clothes in the morning and I can get started right away.”  I have to say I would have to give him an A+ for ‘Cleverness.’

I decide even though we are starting school we are still on vacation as well so I did not declare any exact start time and they are welcome to sleep in and simply start when they wake up.  This is NOT working in my favor.  I have one up every morning before me who comes to wake me up so he can start, one who sleeps until 11 or 12 and one who’s wake up time is as random as rolling dice.  With this schedule I am making breakfast and lunch three separate times (minus 1 breakfast) and teaching all day long.  Rule #3 just got added.  School starts no later than 10:00 a.m., if you are not up, I will wake you up.  More importantly if I am not up, do not wake me up.

Wyoming

Wyoming

Back on the road again heading towards Yellowstone I am taken aback by the absolute beauty in the landscape before my eyes.  “On the 7th day God had finished his work of creation, blessing it and making it Holy.”  For those who doubt the amazing beauty and wonders of God’s creation have never been to Wyoming.  Wyoming, is the most beautiful part of the United States I have ever seen.

We came across several people jumping off of the side of the mountain, at first I thought maybe they too decided to travel 2200 miles with their children in a car, then I realized they were ‘Hang Gliding’ off of the mountain…hmm…maybe something to add to my bucket list.

Love it when someone offers to take our picture!

It’s been a long day and everyone was hungry, feeling like we were in the middle of nowhere (because we were) I asked the 90 year old Gift shop worker where we could get some food.  With a smile, he said at the bottom of the mountain is “Dirty Annie’s”.   Wasn’t quiet sure how to take this but not wanting to be rude I whisper to him, “Do you notice I have 4 kids with me?” He chuckled and assured me it was ‘Family Friendly’.

I made it safely to the bottom of the mountain and pulled into the parking lot.  Gravel drive, Old gas pumps that clearly had not been working in years, only one other car parked and not another person to be seen.  Walking inside to a dim lighted 1/3 restaurant, 1/3 Liquor store & 1/3 not sure, I felt like I was watching myself at the beginning of a CSI episode.  There is 1 table with people and a kitchen of 6 staring at us. I realize I am very far from home when a 12 year old walks in packing a rather large hunting knife and a gun out of his pants.   We order, they mess up the order, twice, yes, there is a pattern starting.  The waitress asks where we are headed, paranoid me in fear she might follow us tells her we are going to Montana.   She tells me that most of the stores are closed for the evening but if we are interested in shopping her boyfriend owns a store in town and if she called him, he would open it up for us.  Really?!?!  OMG!  All of a sudden I feel like Angelina Jolie and I get to go shopping ‘after hours’ in private!  Cool I say, what kind of store is it?…(please say Macy’s, please say Macy’s…)  Jen, you seemed to have forgotten where you were for a moment – “Western Wear” she says.  Hmmm…not so excited anymore.  Most politely I say, ‘I wouldn’t want to trouble him, I’ll try to stop on my way back…to South Dakota”, trying to throw her off my route in case her and her boyfriend are really thieves.   Don’t get me wrong, I have a friend who is a Rancher and she has an amazing style and the coolest cowboy boots that I’d love to get my feet into but I actually drove by this shop and we are talking saddle me up ready for the rodeo wear.

Walking outside back to our car I see a cowboy statue on the side of the porch and tell the boys to go stand next to it so I can take a picture.  It is not until they are 2 feet away that we all realize he ain’t no statue!…Awkward!!!
