Wyoming

Back on the road again heading towards Yellowstone I am taken aback by the absolute beauty in the landscape before my eyes.  “On the 7th day God had finished his work of creation, blessing it and making it Holy.”  For those who doubt the amazing beauty and wonders of God’s creation have never been to Wyoming.  Wyoming, is the most beautiful part of the United States I have ever seen.

Beauty

We came across several people jumping off of the side of the mountain, at first I thought maybe they too decided to travel 2200 miles with their children in a car, then I realized they were ‘Hang Gliding’ off of the mountain…hmm…maybe something to add to my bucket list.

Love it when someone offers to take our picture!

It’s been a long day and everyone was hungry, feeling like we were in the middle of nowhere (because we were) I asked the 90 year old Gift shop worker where we could get some food.  With a smile, he said at the bottom of the mountain is “Dirty Annie’s”.   Wasn’t quiet sure how to take this but not wanting to be rude I whisper to him, “Do you notice I have 4 kids with me?” He chuckled and assured me it was ‘Family Friendly’.

I made it safely to the bottom of the mountain and pulled into the parking lot.  Gravel drive, Old gas pumps that clearly had not been working in years, only one other car parked and not another person to be seen.  Walking inside to a dim lighted 1/3 restaurant, 1/3 Liquor store & 1/3 not sure, I felt like I was watching myself at the beginning of a CSI episode.  There is 1 table with people and a kitchen of 6 staring at us. I realize I am very far from home when a 12 year old walks in packing a rather large hunting knife and a gun out of his pants.   We order, they mess up the order, twice, yes, there is a pattern starting.  The waitress asks where we are headed, paranoid me in fear she might follow us tells her we are going to Montana.   She tells me that most of the stores are closed for the evening but if we are interested in shopping her boyfriend owns a store in town and if she called him, he would open it up for us.  Really?!?!  OMG!  All of a sudden I feel like Angelina Jolie and I get to go shopping ‘after hours’ in private!  Cool I say, what kind of store is it?…(please say Macy’s, please say Macy’s…)  Jen, you seemed to have forgotten where you were for a moment – “Western Wear” she says.  Hmmm…not so excited anymore.  Most politely I say, ‘I wouldn’t want to trouble him, I’ll try to stop on my way back…to South Dakota”, trying to throw her off my route in case her and her boyfriend are really thieves.   Don’t get me wrong, I have a friend who is a Rancher and she has an amazing style and the coolest cowboy boots that I’d love to get my feet into but I actually drove by this shop and we are talking saddle me up ready for the rodeo wear.

Walking outside back to our car I see a cowboy statue on the side of the porch and tell the boys to go stand next to it so I can take a picture.  It is not until they are 2 feet away that we all realize he ain’t no statue!…Awkward!!!

On the Road to Yellowstone

The Road to Yellowstone

Have you ever been to such a wonderful place where you are in complete bliss then as soon as you leave it’s such a come down you feel like you’re in the Black and White part of the Wizard of Oz?  This is exactly how I felt leaving the Reptile Gardens – it was a fantastically great time (As I specifically stated in my last post ‘Reptile Gardens’ but then as soon as we walked through the exit door – POOF! it all changed!  Connor, got wildly depressed because I wouldn’t let him buy a ‘Shooting Rubberband Gun’ – hmm let me think, confided in a car with his 3 brothers for extended periods of time – I don’t think I want to make a side trip to the hospital.  Then he argues that he is practically a ‘man’ and since Scott isn’t with us he was told he is the ‘Man of the House’..er..’Car’ – Hello, You Are 10!  Beckett is beyond tired, crying and fussing and really just needs to fall asleep.  Aidan and Finn are tired, hungry and fighting about where to stop for food.  I am also tired and am starting to freak out a bit realizing I have a 6 hour drive ahead of me to the next hotel which means I would arrive at 1:30 a.m.   So I lost it, a bit, maybe more than a bit.  I say, (more like a yell) “Tell me where you all want to get food because we are getting the food and then we are turning around and driving home!”  Well, that did not exactly help the situation….2 of them started crying and I did as well.  I pull into the closest parking lot which so happens by some crazy miracle be a Starbuck’s.  Thank goodness Beckett has just fallen asleep, I tell the other 3 to put on a movie & give me a minute.  I jump out of the car and call Scott.  Of course he knows exactly what to say to calm me down followed up by his famous line of my trip “You need to regroup” – he tells me to get coffee and he will find me a closer hotel. As always, after talking to him I feel great again.  I jump back into the car, apologize to my boys, family discussion, family vote – no one wants to go home.  Now I have to run into Starbuck’s for a coffee so I jump back out of the car, only this time I see on the ground in front of me a Starbuck’s Gift Card – and it says ‘Thank You’ all over it.  I thought that it was so very odd, I was just out here talking to Scott and didn’t notice it.  I pick it up and walk inside.   My drink is $4.85. Keeping my cool, I hand her the card and say “I am not sure if there is anything on this”  $5.00 she says.  That just covered my drink.  Seriously, that is just crazy.  I looked up to heaven and said “Thank You” back.

I drive 3 hours to get to the next hotel and the last 1.5 is the hardest drive thus far.  By 9:00 it is pitch black, there are no street lights, there are construction cones (that do not glow) in the middle of the street (yes I hit at least 3) and the streets are extremely windy.  I try to tail onto an occasional car that passes me but I eventually always lose them in fear of driving to fast and off of the side of the cliff.  I don’t actually know if I am driving on the side of a cliff  because I can not see anything but, that is what I imagine.  I am leaning so far forward in my seat to see better my back starts to hurt and I am clenching onto the steering wheel so tight my hands start to cramp. I prayed Our Father’s and Hail Mary’s for an hour straight.  We finally arrive safely at 10:30p.m.  I am grateful to everyone who has been praying for our safe travels, your prayers helped us tonight.

Reptile Gardens

Me and my little lizards or turtles, depending on the day, at the Reptile Gardens

I am happy to report the REPTILE GARDENS lived up to its name and the reviews I read about it.  Their website recommends getting there in the morning or early evening to beat the crowds.  Wishful thinking was morning -of course we got there smack in the middle of the day 2:30 – it wasn’t that bad except for when it came to getting seats for their shows. Luckily, I strategically left the boring bird show 5 minutes early to get front row seats for the snake show. (Sadly I have discovered none of my children have been gifted with Parselmouth).

Boys and Snake Guy and Really Big Snake

The ‘Snake Guy’ was really cool letting the boys pet one of the many snakes after the show and ask questions.  Only after about 5 minutes he said he had to go because he was also the ‘Crocodile guy’ and had to go and get ready for that show.   I opted not to let the boys stay and pet the crocodiles after that show.

As I am typing my blog I am noticing in this picture my son Aidan is wearing no shoes, where the hell are his shoes?!?! And how long was he walking around the Reptile Gardens without them?!?

The Tortoises were amazing! This one Connor is next to is about 95 years old and obviously sick of pictures! -As soon as I went to snap a pic it would turn it’s head – I tried 5 different angles and each time it would turn it’s head, rather quickly I might add.

Here’s another real beauty – The American Bald Eagle! (Now if they had this guy doing tricks in the bird show I wouldn’t have left early!)

Fried Taco – Local favorite

Sadly I do not have any pictures from the Crocodile show to share, I set the boys up in the front row but then took Beckett out of his stroller & to the patch of grass near by to run around and stretch his legs. I could’ve stuck him back in the stroller and snapped some pics but honestly it was 6:00 and I was hot, tired and hungry & decided to go find food instead.  I decided to try the local famous dish, the “Fried Taco”- fried dough (like an elephant ear you get at the fair only without the powdered sugar, hmm-that might have been good though) and then all the taco fixings on top.  It was quiet good I may add, either that or it seemed that way since it was the first thing I ate all day!

Happy Happy Day at the Reptile Gardens – The Boys LOVED it, I LOVED it because they all had a GREAT time, no fighting, whining, crying, or complaining!  2 Thumbs UP!

Onto the GIFT STORE and then we will be on our way…

Rapid City (Part 2)

Image

Meet Blankie

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer!  Before heading to the Police Department to file a missing “Blankie’ report we decide to 1st check the car.  About half way up to the roof of the parking garage where our car was parked, there, in the middle of the drive was ‘Blankie’!!!!  Finn’s face lite up like the 4th of July!

Name The Presidents

NAME THAT PRESIDENT!!! — Located around Downtown Rapid City are bronze statues of the Presidents of the USA here are a few – can you name these?  (Click on the picture to blow it up)

Found a Splash Pad – the convenient thing about ‘Road Tripping’ – you always have extra clothes with you!

I have realized trying to keep on such a detailed timeline was stressing me out and not leaving room for the little unexpected treasures we stubble upon.

We splashed around for a bit then packed up to head off to the Reptile Gardens – I can’t wait to see if any of my boys have the gift of ‘Parselmouth’!!!!

Rapid City

Rapid City, SD, we just finish parking the car and start heading back to Hotel Alex Johnson when we stumble upon a Shakespeare in the park production.  The boys beg to stay – hmmm…or were they really begging not go to bed?  Next to the park is ‘Wrigley Field Dogs’ -now, I am not one to believe in coincidences , I think everything happens for a reason and often in situations it is a direct message from God, so we go in to get food.  I walk up to the lady behind the counter with a huge smile on my face and say “We, are Actually from Chicago!”  She just stared back at me.  Ok I think, maybe she didn’t hear me so I say, “You know, Wrigley field, Chicago…” -still nothing but a stare, flew right over her head, she had NO  idea what I was talking about! Whatever, I decide to order and they end up messing up our order… twice, Ok folks! –not really representing Chicago very well here!! …AND, still trying to figure out what the message from God on this one is…

25 minutes into the Play Aidan and Finn have their own Play going on with their stuffed animals and no consideration in their volume to others who are actually trying to watch the feature play and Beckett is all over the place stumbling around like a drunken sailor.  So, I decide I don’t want this night to end as tragic as MacBeth and it’s time to go back to the hotel.

Image

Does this count as a Field Trip for school?

Dun! Dun! Dun!!!!  Tragedy does strike – worse than any Shakespeare play – Finn’s soul companion from birth, known as ‘Blankie’ is lost!!!! Dun! Dun! Dun!!! After a long day everyone is ready for bed and Finn gets a look of despair on his face and tells me blankie is missing.  Remembering my childhood blankie and how it was such a comfort and security, I feel for him and deicide to wake up the baby so we can all go search Rapid City…at 10:00 at night…yeah, no.  Instead, I say we will get up early and look for it in the morning.  In the most desperate voice Finn says, “But what if someone finds it and takes it home and keeps it?!?!!!”  Now, I have to tell you, I had to take every ounce of strength to keep from laughing.  If you have ever seen blankie, a knotted, ripped up ball of yarn, you would know that at that moment, forget Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Hilary Swank -I would have beat them all for the Best Actress award!  I say, “Oh Sweetie!…let’s all pray that doesn’t happen and we find it tomorrow!” but what I was really thinking is let’s all pray that garbage collection isn’t tomorrow and hopefully everyone and thing is afraid to touch it!

Come back soon to find out what happens next!

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore

I can hardly believe I am on my way to see Mt. Rushmore!  Such an iconic symbol of The USA, even won the 2013 cover picture to DK’s  (Dorling Kindersley) USA travel book – which by the way are the BEST travel books EVER! They are full of tips and beautiful colored pictures but even that book could not prepare me for what I was about to see.  Having been told so many times ‘You can see it from the road’, I was driving like an 85 year old Sunday driver in fear of missing it.  Hence No Fear! -coming up the steep sloop of a road, around the corner, there is was, and WOW was it a sight! I was so excited I pulled over almost sideswiping some tourist who thought it was perfectly ok to park in the middle of the street and get out to take a picture.  I have to admit, Mount Rushmore, you took my breath away.  We continued on to the actual Memorial and I was relieved to find at 4:00 more people were going than coming.  For those who have never been, I expected the site to be so huge that from looking straight on you would not be able to see all of it.  I was wrong, it was just there, all in one perfect view and it was absolutely beautiful!

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore

After 5 minutes of looking at the Presidents the boys decide they are hungry…it couldn’t have anything to do with the people walking by with Large (notice how I emphasize large) Ice Cream cones.  No line for Ice Cream -Yeah!  There are 6 Ice Cream choices, 1 Size, Cone or Cup.  My son looks at me and says “Can I try the Cookies n Cream?” — I think “What are you an 8 year old ice cream conosier? – the Cookies n Cream will taste very similar if not exactly the same as the last 4 places you tried it and got it!”  Connor gets his cup he ordered and as he is starting to walk away I think, ‘I guess you get a bigger portion in a cone because he didn’t get very much.  Aidan and Finn get their cones, but theirs also look a little skimpy as well.    ” Excuse me,” I say to the cashier who just took my $15 for 3 ice creams, “why do the people with the cones at the door look like they received twice as much as my boys?”  She looked over and said,  “Those are the ‘Original Thomas Jefferson Vanilla Ice Cream’ recipes and you pay $1 more for that.”  So I follow up with “…and you get more ice cream as well?”   “No” she says.  At this point the line has grown very long and I am holding it up, but I could care less, I say “So why are my kids scoops of ice cream so much smaller than everyone else’s?”    Her reply was, “Often times the parents don’t want their kids getting our full portions and they request we give them less.”  I looked her straight in the eyes and with a smile I said, “This Parent never did nor ever will request such a thing.”  She then told me I could send the boys back for another scoop if I wanted to, and believe me, I did.

Don't mess with my kids I will squash you.

Don’t mess with my kids I will squash you.
